This is the final series post in which I share tasks and progress on my book-marketing plan for my second book. Gift of the Magpie came out August 15, but all my diary posts share my activities from two weeks in the past.

Among other activities, my prior posts covered my setup, recruiting influencers, guest posting, a book launch party, a newsletter, blog interviews, Facebook parties, Ask David Tweets and a Goodreads Ad.

Today, I share all my promotion activities and my evaluation of each thus far.

Influencers

Two thirds of my fifteen influencers posted reviews so far. I’m told I need 100 influencers to “gain any traction.” Wow. I’m still asking my faithful few to promote events, such as the multi-author Facebook party. About 25% of my influencers have been super active.

Announcements

Newsletter: A better than average rate of subscribers opened my email (52.5% mine vs. 23.6% industry average). Clicks for the industry average is 2.6% clicks; mine were 4.9%. Hard to track sales.

Email list: I’m working on growing my 280 with people I know are readers. 

Authors Cross Promotion/Reviews

I’ve received requests from 17 readers/reviewers for my book through this service. I sent preliminary emails to make sure the people wanted the Kindle e-book version, and 53% responded. So far, 5 wrote reviews. I’m confident I’ll receive a few more reviews. I like this service; I’m building my email list and relationships with these readers.

Vessel Project

I purchased this service, which keeps my book in front of readers in my genre for a year. Hard to track sales.

Ads

Facebook, Goodreads, and Amazon ads are exposing my book to many people. I don’t know how effective they are for sales, though. My ten-day-old Goodreads ad has had 36 views but 0 clicks. Not so good. But I only pay for clicks, and readers are viewing my book. My publisher has placed an Amazon ad, but results aren’t in.

Ask David Tweets

I’ve published half my 60 tweets. On my evening tweets, I’ve received 0 – 7 retweets and 0 – 2 likes. Ask David suggests I retweet and like my tweets after they post them. Using good hashtags for my audience is important. Hard to track sales.

Guest Blogs/Interviews

Five blogs have hosted me, and two more are scheduled. I enjoyed interaction with commenters. Hard to track, but one sale was verified. My influencers promoting these posts helped me reach more people. Choose blogs that have high traffic. I prefer to do interviews because they better expose the book.

Giveaways

I signed up for the October giveaway for Sweet Romances with Authors Cross Promotion. This will significantly grow my email list with more readers. I’ll give away three e-books. 

Facebook Party

I’ll host a half-hour slot on a multiple-author Facebook party. So far, 48 people are going and 39 are interested. Although its hard to track sales, this gives me an opportunity to build relationships with readers.

Book Signing

After concentrating on online promotions, I’ve now scheduled a book signing at the local bookstore. I sold 11 copies of my first book there, which is around average. My basket giveaway signup grew my email list. I’ve also scheduled a spot at a retirement center’s craft fair.

Book Launch Party

I mailed 120 invitations to my book launch party this week. I’m looking forward to sharing my talks and visiting with my friends and acquaintances.

Conferences

I’ll lead a workshop at the Virginia chapter’s American Christian Fiction Writers Annual Conference – another opportunity to pay forward the help I’ve received, meet people, and expose my book.

Talks

I plan to schedule talks with women’s groups. I’ve scheduled a library workshop for 2018 to promote my non-fiction book on writing, but I’ll also offer this book.

Sometimes Things Don’t Go as Planned

Although many activities have snags, I’m reporting only the major ones.

Book Launch Party

My proofs finally came, but were so delayed I couldn’t order and receive books by my party date. This’s why I pray and why I hadn’t printed and assembled 120 invitations with the wrong date.

I called my venue contact, my helpers, and my friend who will provide live music. So far, all have the second date available.

I updated the online places I report my scheduled events, such as my website and drafted newsletter. So many things to remember!

Tasks Performed This Past Week 

 
Book Proofs

I received three advance reader copies. Between my husband and I, we found eight errors.

Tip: Don’t think you can find all errors yourself. John didn’t see two I noted, and I missed one he spotted.

Influencers

Because of delays, I sent my sixteen influencers the most current PDFs of my book. This allowed them two full weeks to read the book before the release date.

Tip: Pad your schedule with time to have fun and respond to questions and comments your influencers have.

Online Promotion

 
Facebook Party

I signed up for a half-hour spot on the Facebook Party hosted by my state chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers.

Tip: Look for Facebook parties hosted by writer organizations you belong to. They usually have a following of readers and do the setup work. Although they promote the party, share it on all your social media outlets.

Tip: I added the party details to my Goodreads Author Page. Goodreads makes it easy to invite readers to the party.

Tip: Throughout the year, look for quality items on sale that you can use for giveaways. I’ll give away a book, a bracelet, and a heart-shaped sticky-note dispenser.

Amazon Ad

My publisher offers to co-fund and place Amazon ads. I signed up for one to begin on my release date.

Guest Blogs

I sent items needed for a spotlight on a popular author’s blog, and once again requested guidelines for a guest post due next week.

Keeping Me Straight

 
The Little Things

Tip: I leave spaces on my to-do schedule for small projects that I remember later. For example, adding my new book cover to my email signature hadn’t made it to my weekly list. Also, when someone asked me about my books, I realized I hadn’t replaced my old business cards with my new ones in my purse.

Tip: Daily check the outstanding tasks you’ve typed in red in your marketing spreadsheet. As I did this past week, you’ll sometimes need to remind people to send you information you need to satisfy your commitment to them.

My last three posts, among other activities, talked about my setup, recruiting influencers, guest posting, and a book launch party.

Sometimes Things Don’t Go as Planned

I wrote and sent a guest post early for a blog. The host had double-booked the spot by accident and had to go with the other post because it was part of a series. This’s why I try to send guest posts early and ask for confirmations of receipt. Knowing the situation early, I was able to use the post for a blog I’m a regular on.

I’m still waiting on the final proof from the publisher. Of course, I’m a little nervous about being able to order and receive books in time for my book launch party.

Tasks Performed This Past Week

Newsletter

I wrote and formatted the content for my newsletter to publish on my book’s release date. In my previous newsletter, I announced signing three book contracts in quick succession and told a little about each contracted book. For my newsletter going out on my book’s release date, I’m focusing on that book, presenting:

  • the book cover,
  • the back-cover blurb,
  • what people are saying about my book,
  • a story about how I used an event from my childhood in the book, and
  • upcoming events I’m involved in that subscribers might enjoy.

Guest Interviews

I provided—early—my responses to questions for a blog interview.

Tip: The work you put into responses to interview questions provides content for talks you’ll book at libraries, bookstores, and other speaking events. Hosts ask questions they think will interest their subscribers. Your audiences probably have similar questions. I combine my answers from a few blog interviews and quickly rewrite them into a hopefully interesting talk.

Influencers

I wrote several tweets and Facebook announcement blurbs that my influencers can easily post to their Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Tip: In the brief tweets, I include a book quote, two good readers’ hashtags, and the shortened buy link. I use the Hootsuite’s “Add a link…” box, which shortens my link and puts it in my tweet. If I have room, I include the title.

Book Launch Party

I’ve adhered stamps and address labels to the 120 postcard invitations.

Two 5-minute talks are written. I’ll give them at the party just before two of the three giveaway drawings.

I’ve started packaging the prizes to look pretty for the drawings.

Online Promotion

My Goodreads author page: I’ve added my book.

Facebook author page: I shared my book cover with my followers and boosted it for $3.

Keeping Me Straight

I updated my Excel Marketing spreadsheet noting what I’ve done and what I still need to do. Completed items are in blue; still to do are in red.
