7 Tips to Generate Blog Post Ideas

When we start a blog, we’re told we need to write about something we can sustain over time. Have you written so many blog posts it seems like you’ve covered everything in your field of interest?

I’m on my 206th how-to blog post, but I’m still able to find ideas for posts. Coming up with ideas may be less difficult for you who write journal-type blog posts, but these tips may help you too.

I write posts on writing, blogging, and speaking. You may write blogs on everything about horses, quilting, photography, or gardening. Whatever your field is, these tips should work for you.

Tips to Try

Tip 1: In the process of writing or building my platform, I schedule various tasks. When I’m looking for a post idea, I ask myself, “What am I working on now?” My answer is what is most beneficial for me to research and write a blog post on. Try asking yourself that question.

Here are examples of blog posts I’ve written from projects on which I was currently working.

How to:

  • have a successful book signing
  • fix an unlikeable character
  • write discussion questions for a novel
  • enlist endorsers/write an endorsement for another author
  • write a book based on blog posts
  • plot a story using the Hero’s Journey
  • give an editor a pitch for your story
  • present an engaging speech
  • add humor to your story

Tip 2: When I’m invited to teach writing workshops, I create posts on the content I’ve prepared for those events. If you teach, speak, or lead workshops in your field, your preparation work may provide enough content for multiple posts.


Tip 3: Sometimes I review past posts I’ve written. Often a different angle on a subject comes to mind. Rewrites incorporating something new are perfect for posts.

Tip 4: When I’m not working on something new, I peruse my issues of Writer’s Digest and my writing-craft books for blog ideas. Once I find a fresh idea, I research the subject further from articles online.

A benefit: you can apply the fresh idea to your work in your field. An example of how a post helped me improve my manuscript was: how to add suspense to any genre.

Tip 5: When I attend writers’ conferences, workshops usually inspire several ideas. Be alert to ideas at your next conference or interest-group meeting.

Tip 6: When I give back to others in my field, I receive ideas. For example, I judged 9 stories for a contest. I observed common areas of weak writing. I wrote a post on those. Also, my blog readers have asked me to cover certain subjects.

Tip 7: For me, I ask God to guide me. Then as I follow the above tips, I come across writing topics I want to know more about. After I research the ideas, I have fodder for posts.

Before You Write Content Faster

1.  Ask, “What am I saying to myself?”

  • If it’s, “I’ll always be a slow writer,” choose the opposite. Say, “I’m able to write faster. With the following suggestions and practice, I will write faster.”
  • Don’t give in to negative thoughts.




  • Find your most productive writing time.
  • Give yourself time to establish a pattern of success.
  • Create a focused momentum, purposefully.
  • Put some form of accountability in place.
  • Sit down and move your work forward.

2.  Choose a focus for the post. Writing faster is easy when you know what you want to say.



  • Ask, “What do I want the reader to take away?”
  • Be able to explain your main idea in one sentence.
  • Ask, “What would I like to know about [main idea, e.g. how to write faster]?”

3.  Do the prep work.

  • Read magazines and blogs on your subject. Google it.
  • Don’t think you need groundbreaking ideas; just write what you know and have learned about your main idea.



  • Organize your ideas with an outline. Outlines show how sub-ideas work together to explain what you want to say.
  • Try a mind map: brainstorm words or ideas related to your main idea, or organize words and ideas from your research around your main idea.
  • Create a reusable form for your type of posts.

4.  Keep it short – one tip or one idea.

5.  Write as fast as you can.


  • Lower your standard for the first draft.
  • Get as much written as you can (or more) from what you’ve outlined, without editing it. Writing fast turns off the internal editor or censor and allows creativity to flow.
  • Don’t get in the way. Let your hands do the thinking; give your brain a chance to relate what it knows.
  • Don’t delete a poor sentence; write another version and go on.
  • Don’t allow distractions. Stay focused.
  • Turn off or cover the monitor. If you can’t see errors, you’re less likely to stop and fix them.
  • Don’t stop. If you think of a change for a previous paragraph, jot a note and keep going.

6.  Set time limits.

  • Set a reasonable project time limit. If you give yourself three days for a post, you’ll most likely take three days to do it. If you give yourself one day, you’ll most likely complete it in one day.
  • During the draft, set a timer for chunks of minutes. Don’t stop typing or writing until the timer goes off. Repeat.

After Content Is Written


7.  Edit your post.


  • Correct typos
  • Add styling (subtitles)
  • Add photos
  • Add links
  • Check the flow (move paragraphs or change words)
  • Read it closely. Write tight.
  • Let it sit. When you return, needed changes will pop up.

We do much work to write an interesting blog post, article, or book. Yet our announcements to promote our work fail to draw people to it. We ignore the one thing that works. I say ignore, because experts are constantly encouraging us—begging us—to use this important bit of wisdom. 

Here are examples to show you what I mean.

Set 1:

Subject: Jane Doe Is My Guest Today

First Line 1: Come by and see what Jane has to say.

First Line 2: Stop by and hear about her writing journey.

First Line 3: If you have time, come by and encourage her.

First Line 4: You don’t want to miss what she says about her writing journey.

In Set 1, even though the senders address the readers, using “you,” they don’t tell them anything. We need to find at least one thing in our content our audience will want to know. And lure them with that tidbit.

In Set 2, notice the words “I” and “my”? Most people probably don’t care about us, the blog we’re on, or that another book is out. We must find something in our content that will make readers want to go to Jane’s blog.

First Line 2: Fellow authors, I’ve got a new look! Tell me what you think.

In Set 3, when we write requests like this, we give people no reason to stop what they’re doing and go to one of millions of blogs to see our new look.
